How dare that white woman claim she has a black woman’s booty! Of all the gall! I swear! Niggas can’t have shit! They take our music. They take our style. Now, they’re trying to take booty away from us!
Okay, those aren’t my real views. Yet, I understand the outrage over actress Blake Lively’s Instagram pic. Recently, the white actress uploaded a booty pic with the caption “LA face with an Oakland booty”, a line from Sir Mix-A-Lot’s hit song “Baby Got Back”.
This pissed people off. Some accused Blake Lively of appropriating black culture, stealing from black people.
On the real tip, Blake Livley’s act seemed harmless, her way of saying she has a nice booty too. Yet, black people are getting sick and tired of mainstream stealing from them. Mainstream takes whatever black people create. Then, after a white face is added on to it, black folks are kicked to the curb. With rock music, you saw it with Elvis Presley. The white performer was crowned king of music created by black people. Recently in hip hop, you saw it with Macklemore. Many folks fumed when the white Macklemore won Grammy’s over black Kendrick Lamar, an artist many thought was superior over Macklemore.
As I write these very words, I know I’m preaching to those already in the know. Every time you bring up sensitive subjects like race, some folks turn extra sensitive. I don’t even have to say who gets butthurt the most over this.
For decades, black culture has always appreciated the big booty. Yet, the big booty was always frowned upon in mainstream culture. White women have told me folks used to tease them about their big butts. I know one who recently married a Hispanic dude. Because Hispanic dudes are known to like big butts too, I guess that makes sense. She might have married someone who appreciated her big booty..
“Baby Got Back” is a 1992 protest song aimed at the mainstream’s idea of beauty.
I’m tired of magazines
saying flat butts are the thing
Take the average black man and ask him that
She gotta pack much back
Also, the song praises black women at the same time.
To the beanpole dames in the magazines
You ain’t it, Miss Thing
Give me a sista, I can’t resist her
Red beans and rice didn’t miss her
Every since Sir Mix-A-Lot, mainstream has now embraced booty. My guess is when folks saw Blake Lively’s pic, they saw mainstream stealing from black culture again. I don’t think Blake Livley was doing that. Still, as I said before, I can understand the outrage.
Shout out to my buddy Jeff January for bringing this to my attention.
As for Blake Lively’s booty, what are your thoughts? Dear readers, does baby got back?
